Grand Central Terminal is the biggest energy hog among state buildings, a new report shows.

The terminal uses five times more energy than the weighted average of 16,000 state-owned properties — or a whopping 1,165 kBTU per square foot.

The report by the BuildSmartNY initiative also found the State University of New York, which uses more than 85.5 million square feet of space, or 40 percent of the state’s total facilities, accounted for 51 percent of energy use and $190 million of the state’s $500 million energy tab.

The Department of Corrections, with 38 million square feet, or 18 percent of the total, used 17 percent of the energy and spent about $85 million.

Six entities accounted for 90 percent of the energy use for the state’s portfolio. The mean energy use for the state’s portfolio is 252 kBTU per square foot, but the median is 183 kBTU per foot because a few energy-intensive facilities pushed it higher.
