Canada’s top commercial real-estate services firm is making a splash here by tapping one of the city’s best-known pros to stake out the tri-state territory.

Arthur Mirante, president of global development for Cushman & Wakefield, is joining Avison Young as a principal and tri-state president in their startup Park Avenue office beginning May 9.

“I’m getting a lot of hugs and giving a lot of hugs,” Mirante said as he is amicably wrapping up a 41-year career at C&W.

C&W released a statement “wishing him well on this new chapter in his career,” but privately executives were stunned by his decision to jump ship. Mirante started as legal counsel and spent 20 years as CEO before turning to brokerage.

“I wouldn’t be making this move if I didn’t believe in myself and that I have the financial backing and the philosophical support,” Mirante said of Avison Young.

Under the leadership of former New Yorker Mark Rose, the Toronto-based firm has been on a tear the past three years, growing from 11 to 30 offices, and from 300 to more than 900 professionals.
